I3 - oil

Due to serious time constraints, I'm not going to be able to keep up the pace of a Sumerian word every single day. It's just too much. But instead of stopping altogether, I'm changing the format to make it the Sumerian Word of the Week, rather than of the day. The word for each week will be posted on Sunday nights from here on out.

This week's word is "i3", which means "oil" or "butter". The sign also has the reading "zal", which is a verb meaning "to flow, to melt" or "to pass (time)". As well, the sign has several additional phonetic readings - "li2", "ne2" and "ni".

I3 looks like this, and is pronounced like the name of the English letter "e".

Whew! I was worrying that you were going to run out of words!!! Thank goodness you're slowing down...to make it last longer. Never mind all the butter. :0)

Thanks for finding the time to do it at all. It is such a treat.

I have applied for a Guggenheim in your name, so that you can set aside all your other doctoral work and do Sumerian Word of the Week full time.

It was hard to get all the ink off my hand after each day... now I can use a Sharpie and still have time for the ink to come off. :) For some reason, I have urges to write on my hands with Sharpies

And again with the picking really delightful words. Thank you.

Um, it's probably just me, but I can't see the image. I'm just getting a square with a little red 'x' in the upper left hand corner.

Huh. I have no idea what was going on with that - it was working fine last night, but this morning I'm just getting the square with the red x as well. The server's not down or anything, so I have no idea.

Anyway, I fixed it for now, so hopefully you can see it again.

Hi,

Is this community still alive? Your last entry seem to have been done in June 2006. I hope you are still active here. Sorry, I am a newbie and I understand you are very busy with your PHD which you might have finished by now. I would love to learn Summerian and Latin so I am here for the obvious reason.

Cheers!
Josie
