This journal is the home of the Sumerian word of the day. A couple of times a week, it will be updated with a Sumerian word, with its phonetic reading and meanings, plus anything interesting about it.

All past words are in the memories, and the tags.

I'm shar_gaz, currently working on my PhD in Assyriology (the study of Mesopotamia) and preparing for my comprehensive exams. This community is mostly to help me study. While I'd love to answer any questions you have, I'm usually really strapped for time, so I probably won't be able to answer most of them. If you're interested in the Sumerian for a particular random word, I recommend you use the online Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary, which lets you search for either Sumerian or English, and is extremely useful and comprehensive.

Speaking of the PSD, the graphics for the signs used here are all taken from that site. While the forms of Sumerian signs weren't very standardized, these forms are the most basic, and if you know them, you'll be able to read most things.

But if you're interested in talking more about Sumerian, the word of the week, your experiences, etc, you can join sumerianstories, a sister community set up for that purpose.

Another resource you may find useful is the The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature.
